How we check the calculators

Current version: v1.8 · last review: 30 October 2026. Every result below was produced by this version.

Formulas that look right can still be wrong, so every calculator on this site was checked by a separate review. To be clear about who did it: the review was carried out by AI review agents that had not written the code and were instructed to be sceptical, not by a licensed professional engineer, and no calculator has yet been reviewed or signed off by one. For each tool the reviewer read the formulas and the code, compared them with textbooks, standards and manufacturer data (Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design, Machinery's Handbook, ISO, DIN, AGMA and EN standards, and catalogues from SKF, Gates, Tsubaki, KHK, Bosch Rexroth and others), recomputed the default case and the worked example with separate code, and where possible ran a published worked example through the calculator.

In total 352 results were compared. Where the review found a mistake, it was corrected and is listed under the tool. The tables show the value the reference gives, the value the current calculator gives, the difference, and a verdict: match, method difference (the calculator deliberately uses a documented simplification, explained in the note) or error.

These are design calculators, not certification. For safety-critical parts, check the final design against the full standard and the supplier's data. If you find a number that looks wrong – and especially if you are a practising engineer willing to review a calculator – please tell us; reviews by named engineers will be listed here.

Re-run the tests yourself

Every check below is also an automatic test: the inputs, the value the reference gives and the allowed tolerance. The button loads each live calculator in your browser, enters the inputs and compares the result. Nothing is sent anywhere. The test definitions are in tests.json.
