Tap Drill Chart

Tap drills for metric coarse and fine, UNC and UNF threads, with the thread percentage each drill really gives, the 6H minor-diameter band, drills for forming taps and ISO 273 clearance holes. Prints on A4.

Use this chart when you need the drill for a tapped hole. The cutting-tap column gives the drill for about 77 % thread, the usual choice in steel; the thread % column shows what that drill actually gives, and the minor-diameter column shows the band the hole has to stay in for the thread gauge to pass. Forming (roll) taps push the metal into the thread instead of cutting it, so they need a larger hole – use their own column. For metric screws the chart also lists the clearance hole for the part the screw passes through.

Assumptions and sources

Need a size or setting that is not in the chart? The calculator takes any thread percentage, cutting or forming taps, your material and thread length, and gives the blind-hole depth and tapping speed.

FAQ

What size drill do I need for an M6 tap?

5.0 mm for a cutting tap. It gives about 77 % thread and lies inside the 6H minor-diameter band of 4.918 – 5.154 mm. A forming (roll) tap needs a 5.6 mm hole.

What drill for M8 and M10 taps?

M8 × 1.25: 6.8 mm (74 % thread). M10 × 1.5: 8.5 mm (77 %). For the fine threads M8 × 1 and M10 × 1.25 use 7.0 mm and 8.8 mm.

Why is the thread percentage not 100 %?

A full 100 % thread needs a hole exactly at the minor diameter, which makes the tap very hard to turn and easy to break. A 70 – 77 % thread is almost as strong because the bolt thread fails first, so standard tap drills aim there.

Can I use the same drill for a forming tap?

No. A forming tap does not remove metal, it pushes it into the thread, so the hole must be larger – for M6 5.6 mm instead of 5.0 mm. With the cutting-tap drill the forming tap jams or breaks.

What is the difference between close, normal and loose clearance holes?

They are the three ISO 273 series. Close (fine) gives accurate location, normal (medium) is the usual choice for bolted parts, and loose (coarse) leaves room for position errors, for example in welded or cast parts. For M8 they are 8.4, 9 and 10 mm.
