Bolt Torque Chart

Tightening torque and clamp force for metric coarse and fine bolts M3–M30 in classes 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9, and UNC / UNF SAE Grade 5 and 8, at 75 % of proof load. Pick the friction of your thread finish.

This chart answers the everyday question: how tight? Every torque value tightens the bolt to 75 % of its proof load, a usual target for joints you may open again, and the preload column shows the clamp force that gives. Friction changes the answer more than anything else: a waxed or moly-coated bolt needs only half the torque of a dry one for the same clamp force. Choose the nut factor K for your thread finish – the tables switch to it, and print with it.

Assumptions and sources

Need a size or setting that is not in the chart? The calculator takes your own K factor and preload percentage and adds bolt stretch, the force on the wrench and classes 4.6, 5.8 and Grade 2.

FAQ

What torque for an M10 8.8 bolt?

50.5 N·m with dry or zinc-plated threads (K = 0.20), which gives a clamp force of about 25.2 kN. Lightly oiled (K = 0.18) it is 45.4 N·m, with moly paste (K = 0.13) 32.8 N·m.

Should I use the dry or the lubricated value?

Use the value for the condition the thread is really in. Lubricant lowers friction, so the same torque stretches the bolt much more – applying a dry value to an oiled or anti-seize coated bolt can overload it.

Why 75 % of proof load and not 90 % of yield?

75 % of proof load is the calculator's default target for reusable joints with plain torque tightening. For an 8.8 bolt it is about 68 % of the yield strength, which leaves room for the ±25 % scatter of torque tightening. Higher preloads need angle or yield-controlled tightening.

What torque for a 1/2-13 Grade 5 bolt?

102 N·m (75 ft·lb) dry (K = 0.20), with about 40 kN clamp force. Grade 8 needs 144 N·m (106 ft·lb).

Does it matter whether I turn the nut or the bolt head?

The chart assumes similar friction under the head and under the nut. Turn the part with the smoother, flatter bearing face if you can; turning the head of a bolt in a long clearance hole adds shank friction and gives less preload.
